Formal Name: Platanus occidentalis
Color: Sapwood is white to light yellow and heartwood is light to dark brown.
Shade: Medium
Grain: Fine closed texture with interlocked grain. Contrasts well with other species.
Workability: Machines well but high speed cutters are needed to prevent chipping. Resistant to splitting. Wood glues well and stains, with care to an excellent finish. It dries fairly rapidly with a tendency to warp.
Physical Properties: Moderate in weight, hardness, stiffness and shock resistance. Turns well on the lathe and has good bending qualities.
Uses: furniture, millwork, paneling and mouldings, flooring, furniture parts (drawer slides), kitchenware, butcher blocks, toys and fruit crates
