Color: Sapwood, which is usually very narrow, is white to grayish brown. Heartwood is a chestnut brown color that can often contain pink and red tones variegated with different shades of brown.

Grain: Straight coarse with a medium to coarse texture. Resembles black walnut in grain.
Workability: Works easily with hand and machine tools, as well as nailing, screwing and gluing well.
Physical Properties: Low density with weak bending strength. Excellent for carving, a soft wood.
